Maybe you’re ready for a career change. Or you want to earn an industry recognized credential, learn English, earn a high school diploma or GED® credential, or earn money while you learn a trade in a State Registered Apprenticeship. If so, adult education is for you! 

Adult education programs in Delaware are affordable and offer the flexibility and convenience you need to grow and succeed. No matter where you live in Delaware or what your starting point is, there’s a program that’s perfect for you!

Adult Education Opportunities

The following programs are offered in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties.
James H. Groves Adult High School

James H. Groves High School is for individuals age 16+ who have not finished the requirements to earn a high school diploma. We are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Registration is ongoing.

GED® Classes

Our FREE GED® classes offer helpful skills to prepare you for the GED® test. The GED® test consists of four different subject areas: Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science. GED® classes help you prepare for the Official GED® test. These classes are offered in multiple community locations during daytime and evening hours.

Apprenticeship

We call Apprenticeship the “Other Four-Year Degree.” It is the best way to learn a skilled trade and earn the most sought after industry recognized credential, the Journeyperson Certificate. Our Registered Apprenticeship program combines daily hands-on training through your sponsoring employer combined with trade related classroom instruction.

English As A Second Language (ESL)

ESL classes are offered FREE of charge to those students who need to learn English or improve their English skills. FREE Career & technical classes with English language support are also available for multi-language learners. Job placement assistance is provided! Funding options are available for these classes.

Career Training

Rapid training with job placement assistance is available for adults looking to change careers, advance in their career and obtain industry-relevant credentials. Programming is available in healthcare professions, skilled and mechanical trades, IT and more. Funding is available for qualified individuals.

Tuition Assistance

We believe adult education should be accessible for everyone. Most of our programs qualify for tuition assistance, which means you can complete your education with little to no cost. Pathway to Apprenticeship

Interested in pursuing an apprenticeship? Our programs guide you every step of the way. Explore the infographic below for a clear, step-by-step look at the process—from enrolling in a pre-apprenticeship program to earning college credits.

Enroll in a Pre-Apprenticeship Program:

Enroll in a state approved pre-apprentice program through your local vocational technical school district.

Earn Credits Toward Your Apprenticeship:

Registered pre-apprenticeship programs provide students with the opportunity to earn Adult Education advanced placement credits.

Work Toward Your Journeyperson’s Papers:

A Journeyperson certificate is the most sought-after credential in the skilled trades.

Earn Up to 42 College Credits:

Journeypeople can receive up to 42 academic credits toward a degree using Wilmington University's STEP Path.

 

Grant Funded Transportation & Logistics Program.

The USDOL – Employment and Training Division awarded an $800,000 Community Project grant to support the creation of the Statewide Vo-Tech Districts Partnership in Transportation & Logistics Training. This grant funds 100% of training costs for qualified applicants enrolling in specially designated maintenance, welding, CDL, and logistics courses with the New Castle County Vo-Tech, Polytech, and Sussex Tech adult education divisions.
